Several decisions concerning our March workshop in Istanbul are there. This is an intermediary workshop focused on one case study, before the october 08 athens and july09 istanbul main meetings.
Expected arrivals will be on Tuesday 11.03 (or on Wednesday 12.03) and departures, on Tuesday 18.03.
This program will be limited to 25 participants due to the bus size.
But there will be also an option of a second group arriving on friday 14.03 and departing on thursday 20.03.08 , upgrading the group size to 50. The two groups would intersect during the workshop at the weekend.

“2 days guided coach tour, 'introduction into the history and concept of built environment in the metropolis of Istanbul - with an emphasis to the history of devaulerization and gentrification processes of the settlements of Istanbul' “

This tour is meant to provide a basic stock of knowledge on the particularities of Istanbul model of urbanisation and gentrification.
It will be repeated prior and after to main INURA meeting in Istanbul in June/July 2009.
Tour limited to 25 pax due to bus size.
The tours are at this workshop inclusive part of the program. You cannot opt them out.
In July 2009 main meeting in istanbul they will be offered as optional pre-post conference tours. I recommend to do this part already.

“2 days Workshop in Sulukule”
Coordinated by Asli Kiyak Ingin and Orhan Esen.
We will deal with the situation of the roma settlement in Sulukule at the walls of the ancient city. The neighbourhood is threatened by a total demolition and rebuild process. It is directly neighbouring an area with high touristic potential. 'Not yet realised' as the mayor and other gentrifiers would put it.
Sulukule is one of the hotspots of the gentrification disuccussions inr Istanbul today.The neighbourhood is organized, there is a citizens initiative supporting the settlers, fighting actively.
Workshop will introduce different actors, including
gentrifiers and their projects, authorities+planners, the civic initiative, the resistance, inhabitants with various standpoints, solidarity action group, alternative planning initiatives, ...
Work split into smaller groups ... A student group from Development Planning Unit of UCLondon has been doing some work there last term. There will be also a presentation and evaluation of their work on the basis of most recent developments in the area.
Workshop will possibly start at Friday evening with a multi actor meeting.

Important: There will be only a limited amount of reduced (student) rates available. This contingency (1 reduced payer for 2 regular payers) will be allocated on first come first serve basis.
For sponsorship has been asked. In case of a positive answer, more services during the program as well an unlimited access to reduced rates will be rendered. (documentation, simultaneous translations, ...)

Our focal point in Istanbul will be the Taksim / Beyoglu area.
If you organize your stay yourself / via friends etc pls make sure that you stay in this area. Otherwise the travel times in the metropolitan area may become a major hassle to your participation. pls avoid staying in the so called old town.
Usually the cheap flyers also offer packages including hotel accomodation and transfer. (to your benefit at night flights via cheap flyers) Ask for a hotel/hostel in the Taksim area. including Tunel / Galata...
We are also examining the possibility of offering hotel rooms at good rates in Taksim area. A notice on that as well as on payment modalities will follow very soon with the second announcement.
